"If you wonder why some of us hesitate to make judgments about rumors, to step in to save people who have horror stories to share, or why we simply don't want to answer private messages..." thank you for this. Managing the permeability of that fourth wall is a dicey business for artists of all kinds, even leaving aside the complications of identity on the internet.
Thanks for sharing that; I’ll watch it later to see if it’s something I can watch with my 12 & 14yr old to give them more perspective on why I and their mom are worried about more social media for them
People do seem to let their guards down online. Most people would never get into a paneled van with a stranger, but the digital version, just hopping into a chatroom, people do all the time. They have a weird and false sense of protection.
I wrote a bit about boundaries for up-and-coming indies recently, I think we really need to get a little more aggressive to bring the balance back to middle.
People approach with their stories and confidences, and they become angry if you don’t want to engage with them. I’ve been threatened by people over things like this. One woman who sent scads of bizarre messages of social media over the years and was recently threatening to get me “canceled” has a monster thread about her stalkery behavior directed at online personalities over on LOLCOW that goes on for over 2000 posts. Buy apparently, I’m the bad guy for not, I dunno, getting her access to famous people. I don’t even have much access to famous people frankly I don’t know what folks think I’m doing out here in comic book drawing land, spending all my time with rock stars in green rooms and eating bon bons? It’s nuts.

90% of interactions with fans are entirely positive, 5% are a little dicey, 5% are dangerous. The 5% will eat up a huge amount of time and energy.

Good heavens...
