Hey, that's late-eighties Jerry Ordway on the color guide! He is among my favorite artists of superhero material, particularly from this period. His work with Mike Machlan on INFINITY, INCORPORATED featured many nods to DC's earlier artists. Here, on ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, some of that carries over, such as circus-strongman torso, inspired by Wayne Boring's model.
I keep a supply of non-photo blue pencils for sketching. I used to use regular pencils, but then I found these and never looked back. I've seen other people sketch in red, which is also cool. But it looks a bit weird if I use any color but NP blue, anymore. If I particularly like what I did, I'll line it in pen, usually a micron. But my sketchbooks are filled with blue. 😊
When you see your old art pop up like this, is it an “oh, cool” kind of moment or a “I can’t believe I looked like that back then” kind of moment? I imagine a mix of both!
Definitely a mix of both! Some of my old art was just terrible, some of it was just a case of deadline rush, or bad pairings with other creators, and then the old standby - lack of skill. And once in awhile...I hit a high note. And wonder why I didn't always hit the high note!
Thanks for this look at your process and the history of coloring! Fascinating stuff. I’m sorry that fanzine editor was so abusive towards you, that’s awful.
Thank you, Colleen.

I'm sure he just thought he was being honest.
