The Magic of a Midnight Sky

I had a Hardy Boys poster on my wall and all of Shaun Cassidy’s albums, but never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I’d be doing the art for his 2019 tour poster.

I thought we were going to get married and solve mysteries together, but doing the poster was a pretty good deal.

Originally, Shaun wanted hand painted art, and to own the final. However, it quickly became apparent that Shaun wanted lots of changes and experimented a lot with his ideas. Doing an original painting would require frequent extensive revisions on the original. Which would be a disaster as I’d been planning to work in watercolor.

I convinced him to go for digital art instead, and cut my fee since he was no longer getting an original.

The art went through many changes for which I took nearly 100 screen shots for approvals. This is one of the few times I used a digital figure for placement. Shaun changed his mind about the figure at one point, then changed back to the original figure later.

But before we even got to this point, there were many thumbnail designs! I did around 40 for this job. He called frequently to discuss every detail.

I can’t tell you how bizarre it was to have my fave teen idol, the man whose picture had been on my wall, calling me on the phone.

Man, talk about all good things come to those who wait! I just had to wait a really long time!

Since Shaun is a magic enthusiast, and had performed as The Great Cassidini as a boy, he wanted references to this in the entire image! I had a lot of fun with these concepts!

All of the final elements were on a layered file and some were used on the tour backdrop and products. I sketched in the logo idea and my assistant comic art restoration specialist Allan Harvey did the Adobe Illustrator final work on that, because my knowledge is limited to Photoshop.

I really like some of the bits that I didn’t get used in these. I must find another place to employ these ideas!
